Online School

A cold breeze breaks through the warm rays and the sun doesn’t burn as brightly; the ending of summer brings the beginning of fall.  However, this fall also marked an unpredictable start for all students this semester who must adjust to the Covid-19 pandemic.  I myself opted to take online classes in the safety of my parents’ home this semester – and with good reason.  In the beginning of August, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, a university with approximately 30,000 students and 4,000 staff members, had welcomed its students back to campus.   Just a week later, the student body experienced a corona virus outbreak, what the media calls a “clustering of cases”, making up 44% of cases in the state of North Carolina as of August 28th.  Despite having taken “every necessary precaution” against coronavirus, UNC had to ask students to leave school just two weeks after the start of the semester.

It’s no surprise that other universities in America have become a Corona Virus hub.  The dangerously growing clusters prove that the precautionary measures that universities take are futile alongside off-campus student hang-outs and gatherings.   After having observed these outcomes, numerous American colleges including big state schools and the IV Leagues switched to online remote classes.  Schools that are in session have been dismissing and suspending students who are caught congregating outside of school.  Students who are tested positive are also sent away- but then what?  They could neither stay on campus because they are infected, nor go back home in fear of spreading the virus even further.  They’re left to take care of themselves, whether they are handling their mild cold-like symptoms or suffering from the full force of Covid-19.   Now what?

The uncertainty of the fall semester ultimately puts the future of the education system up in the air.  Virtual classes have become normalized, and standardized exams for college admissions are also simulated.  The pandemic appears to be an exciting opportunity for tech in education as the dependence on technology is creating a high demand for tech development.  Even a university class that I am taking at NYU, Business of Media, has changed to the Business of AR and VR to indicate the demand for technology that could replace and, perhaps, enhance the education experience.  After observing the rippling effects of the pandemic on the US’s education system, Professor Scott Galloway, a marketing professor at NYU who was elected to the World Economic Forum's "Global Leaders of Tomorrow," predicts that post-pandemic American education will be made up of partnerships between big tech companies, like Google, and some of the most prestigious universities.

Well, what does this mean?  For starters, this new online education system will ultimately drive out traditional structures of in-person classes on a campus, and the few that do remain is expected to be reserved just for the top 1%.  The availability of online schooling, however, will higher the number of students enrolled which would respectively lower the cost of education.  Generally speaking, however, a greater number of students will not only graduate from college, but have a higher education experience that will eventually make them extremely successful.

Galloway’s predictions seem to yield an ideal outcome for education.  However, I cannot help but think about the ways this possible education system could jeopardize the integrity of the social learning experience for students.  Campuses would only be available to such few students, taking away a significant aspect of the college experience for many: the fruition of childhood into adulthood through personal growth.  Making new friends or forming relationships with professors and teachers is already increasingly unnatural and difficult to do through online school.  The classroom environment, which encourages banter and discourse, will be compromised as it is limited to the sounds of static often accompanied with Zoom or other platforms used for online classes.  Students learning to think and form opinions for themselves by engaging in discussion with their peers and looking to guidance from professors would be replaced with independent projects with little to no flexibility. College is supposed to be the place where people dream to go to not only fulfill their academic and professional goals, but to also discover their innate passions and identity.  It appears to me, that this hypothetical education system will, admittingly, result in an incredibly successful generation who will only lack communication skills to build human to human relationships and their discovery of self-identity.
